How Does PTO Shaft Work?

If you have to lift your equipment off the ground to connect the shaft or have a shaft that is too long, forcing the connection could damage both. If you have your existing PTO shaft handy, it’s easy to confirm your length. Close it and measure from the PTO shaft yoke to yoke.

How to Determine Tractor PTO Shaft Sizes?

A tractor PTO shaft on a tractor is used to pull power and torque from the operating machine's transmission. It is critical to choose the right PTO shaft for the specific equipment and tractor you are working on because the wrong one can cause damage to your tractor, implement, or even vehicle. To determine which PTO shaft is required for your tractor, measure the length of the tractor PTO shaft from yoke to yoke. There are a few ways to find the proper PTO shaft size for your tractor:

• A tractor PTO shaft allows you to operate equipment that requires a low rpm without excessive noise or vibration.
• They can be hydraulic or mechanical, and they come with a clutch.
• For tractor owners who do not need a high-quality transmission, economy tractor PTO shafts from HZPT are a perfect choice.
• Depending on your tractor's model, you can choose between hydraulic or mechanical models. Once you know what your transmission PTO shaft is capable of, it's easy to determine which type will fit your needs.

Agricultural PTO Shaft Length Limit

The PTO shaft is the system that powers your tools. Therefore, it is important to understand how it works to ensure user safety. Maintenance requirements must also be understood to prevent potential mechanical problems. PTO shafts have ratings and are not necessarily interchangeable between tractors or tools. Therefore, the correct shaft must be fitted to the tool according to the manufacturer's specifications, and its length must be correct.

Length: The length of the PTO shaft is determined when the tool is first installed on the tractor. If the PTO shaft needs to be shortened, the operator must cut the shaft to the correct length using the supplier's formula. This is usually done by taking measurements from the tractor output shaft and mounting the input shaft to the shortest position of the PTO shaft.
Too long: If your PTO shaft is too long (or if the telescopic tube gets stuck), there may be "end thrust," which can damage the tractor's internal PTO drive or implement the clutch and gearbox, potentially voiding your machine's warranty.
Too short: If the PTO shaft is too short, it may detach from the tool, causing major safety problems and possible damage.

How to Cutting PTO Shaft to Length?

If the PTO shaft is too long, it may jam when lifting the three-point hook. It may cause damage to the chipper bearings or tractor PTO shaft. If the PTO shaft is too long, it must be cut. An equal amount must be shortened in both halves of the PTO shaft.

1. Install the chipper on the three-point suspension device of the tractor.

2. Cut off the engine and remove the key. Place the chipper on a firm, level surface.

3. Lift the three-point suspension device so that the force-taking shaft of the chipper and the force-taking device of the tractor is at the same height. The PTO shaft and the power input should be closest to each other at this location.

4. Pull open the PTO shaft. Attach half of the shaft to the chipper so that the locking pin is locked. Place the other end of the chipper flush with the end of the tractor PTO shaft. Set the end side aside. Mark on the shield how much must be cut. The tubes must be so short that they cannot reach the bottom of any chipper location.

5. Cut the plastic pipe.

6. Cut a piece from the profile tube the same length as the piece you cut from the guard. Shorten the other half of the PTO shaft to the same length.

7. File off sharp edges of profile tubes.

Agricultural PTO Shaft Maintenance and Lubrication

The PTO shaft should be greased regularly to keep the universal joints from failing and to stop the shaft from seizing. Failure to grease your shaft regularly or as outlined in the PTO shaft’s maintenance schedule could result in end thrust potentially destroying the implement’s gearbox. It is recommended to grease standard universal joints every 20 hours or 8 hours for severe conditions. Remember! Grease follows the easiest path through internal ports to the four cross bearings. Overheating and poor-quality grease baked in one port will prevent grease from reaching that bearing, resulting in the failure of individual cross bearings. Most importantly, ensure that you fully open the guard cover to ensure grease flows to all cross bearings. Greasing through the small guard access hole is not good enough. Also, check the state of the PTO shaft safety guards; if they are damaged or in poor condition, arrange replacement assuring the safety of the operator.
