Cement Polishing Gearbox for Smooth Concrete Floors and Walls

Concrete polishing refers to the preparation and restoration of concrete floors. If you’ve ever had the experience of re-sanding wood, the concrete polishing process is very similar. It uses a high-efficiency polishing device with progressively sized grits. These fine grits feature discs embedded with diamonds and are very effective when sanding dull-looking concrete surfaces until the gloss is what you want.

What Is Concrete Polishing?

Concrete polishing refers to the preparation and restoration of concrete floors. If you've ever had the experience of re-sanding wood, the concrete polishing process is very similar. It uses a high-efficiency polishing device with progressively sized grits. These fine grits feature discs embedded with diamonds and are very effective when sanding dull-looking concrete surfaces until the gloss is what you want.

How to polish concrete floors?

Polishing concrete is very similar to sanding wood. Machines equipped with diamond-segmented abrasives (akin to sandpaper) are used to grind down concrete surfaces to the desired degree of shine and smoothness. As when sanding wood, you gradually progress from coarser-grit to finer-grit abrasives. (In this case, grit is the particle size of the diamond.) The result is a glossy, mirror-like finish.

You can polish concrete using wet or dry methods. Although each has its advantages, dry polishing is the method most commonly used in the industry today because it's faster, more convenient, and environmentally friendly. Wet polishing uses water to cool the diamond abrasives and eliminate grinding dust. Because the water reduces friction and acts as a lubricant, it increases the life of the polishing abrasives. The chief disadvantage of this method is the cleanup. Wet polishing creates a tremendous amount of slurry that crews must collect and dispose of in an environmentally sound manner. With dry polishing, no water is required. Instead, the floor polisher is hooked up to a dust-containment system that vacuums up virtually all of the mess.

How to polish concrete – what you need to know

  1. Remove any adhesive materials left on the concrete.

Removing stains from surfaces, including glue, mastic, nail strips, or anything else, can be done mechanically.
This requires concrete grinding equipment, which can be rented from concrete equipment suppliers. Often mechanical removal of the adhesive material from the top of the concrete will suffice, but if the adhesive is stubborn or severe, chemical removal may be required.
  2. Crack and joint repair

After the adhesive is completely removed, you need to address cracks and joints in the concrete. These can be filled with polyurea joint filler. If there are areas where the floor has been particularly battered, spalling repairs may be required.

  3. Grind the concrete

Grinding concrete is similar to grinding wood. It requires a concrete grinder and a series of diamond tools to enter the machine. Diamond tools and their various particle sizes are like sandpaper - the more the number, the higher the finish, And the smaller the number, the farther the completion. You start at the bottom and gradually rise to a higher, more OK gravel level.
Diamond tools are attached to the bottom of the grinder to cut concrete - yes, they are natural diamonds. Because of their hardness and resistance to the high heat generated by the friction of grinding concrete, they are very suitable for this application.
You want to start the grinding process with a diamond of 30 to 40-grain size, grind it again with a diamond of 80-grain size, and then finish it with a diamond of 150-grain size or finer if necessary.

  4. Densify, or harden, the concrete

To optimize the performance and appearance of concrete floors, chemical densification is essential. Once the ground is ground to the required level, it is easy to thicken with chemical thickeners/hardeners such as LS, LS/CS, or mixed thickeners.

  5.  Polish the concrete

Polishing is done with the same concrete grinder but connected with diamond tools of higher grain size. Polishing usually starts with diamonds of about 100 to 200-grain sizes and ends with diamonds of 800 or 1500 grain sizes.

  6. .Protect the concrete
