PTO Shaft for Hesston Square Balers 4690 4690S
New CV (Constant Velocity) PTO shaft without implementing yoke, size 6. C-to-C length is 48″ (1210 mm). Tractor end has 6,1-3/8″ splines. Replaces Bondioli & Pavesi No: BPCV612100101. Fits Case-IH andHesston square balers. This is a complete PTO driveline assembly minus the implement yoke. It replaces the tractor half PTO driveline. It may be necessary to cut this driveline to length. Verify the length by ensuring that sufficient overlap of the drive tubes exists in all working positions without the possibility of bottoming out.

Agricultural Equipment Used PTO Shaft
As long as the device does not have its own engine, you will see it being used. For example, you will often see power takeoff used in commercial vehicles and agricultural equipment. In fact, PTO innovation mainly comes from the wisdom of farmers. The tractor engine is used as a PTO to operate a jackhammer or other equipment.
Some other applications you see for PTO include:
wood chipper
Hay baler
Harvester
Mechanical arm
water pump
PTO Shaft Installation Disassembly
Install assembly
1. press-fit plastic pipe and plastic cap,
2. fill the groove on the horn with oil
3. Slide the nylon bearing into the groove
4. Align nylon bearing and plastic protective cover
Disassembly
1. remove the nylon bearing clamp (three places) with a screwdriver, and then separate the steel pipe and plastic protective cover.
2. Take off the nylon bearing from the groove of the yokes.
3. repeat the above-mentioned steps for the other side.
How to Shorten PTO Shaft?
1. Remove the safety shield.
2. Shorten the inner and outer tubes according to the required length, and the inner and outer tubes shall be shortened by the same length at one time
3. Deburr the edges of the drive tubes with a file and removes all filings from the tubes.
4. Shorten the inner and outer plastic pipes according to the required length, and the inner and outer plastic pipes shall be shortened by the same length at one time.
5. Grease the internal drive tubes and reassemble them with a safety shield.
Check the minimum and maximum length of the driveshaft installed on the machine. In working conditions, the drive tubes should overlap 2/3 length, and the plastic tube should never be separated.
PTO Shaft Lubrication
Frequent lubrication is required. Grease the driveline shaft parts at hourly intervals as indicated on the drawing left.
Causes of PTO Shaft Accidents
Along with clothing and limbs being caught in PTO shafts, there are many other causes for PTO shaft accidents, including:
- Many tractors, especially older models, lack PTO shaft shields or have damaged or ineffective shields.
- PTOs may be engaged without operator input. If a PTO shaft is attached to a moving tractor, for example, but is not also attached to an accessory, the rotating shaft may catch on ’ clothing, limbs or hair, dismembering, scalping or mutilating them.
- Some farm equipment must be running in order for to make adjustments or correct malfunctions. Since PTO shafts rotate when the equipment they are attached to is operated, may be exposed to the rapidly spinning PTO shaft while examining their equipment.
- Work practices such as clearing crop plugs may expose operators to PTO shafts.
- Defective PTO shafts can disconnect from the machinery they are attached to. If so, they may swing and/or break off, striking anyone within range.
Safety Tips for PTO Shaft Use
The National Safety Council publishes safety tips for PTO shaft use. This included:
- Keep all PTO shaft shielding (including the master shield) in place.
- Repair or replace damaged or missing shields.
- Stay safely away from unshielded moving parts.
- Watch your step when walking or working around a running machine.
- Wear work clothing with no loose ends or strings to catch on or be caught by machinery.
- Keep long hair under a cap or tied back to prevent it from being caught by the machinery.
- Keep children out of the danger zone.
- Stop the PTO shaft when dismounting from the tractor.
PTO Shaft Maintenance Tips
- lubricate the bearings regularly as recommended by the manufacturer - do not over-grease the bearing as the excess grease will attract dirt and dust.
- clean the inner and outer sliding surfaces of the telescopic section of the guard daily or more frequently if the manufacturer recommends it - do not lubricate the sliding section of the guard with grease unless the manufacturer recommends it.
- regularly remove the guard and clean the shaft with penetrating oil.
- make sure that the U-guard on the tractor is in good condition. If it is bent, it can damage the end of the PTO shaft guard.
- make sure that the O-guard fitted to the implement is the correct size to suit the PTO shaft guard.
- make sure that the U-guard on the tractor and the O-guard on the implement overlap the PTO shaft guard by at least 50mm.
- make sure that the PTO shaft and guard are the correct lengths for the machine - the PTO shaft guard telescopic section should be slightly shorter (not by more than 25mm) than the length of the telescopic halves of the PTO drive shaft.
- lubricate the sliding metal PTO drive shafts as recommended by the manufacturer (usually before starting work and after every eight hours of use).
- make sure that the button on the end of the PTO shaft moves freely, as the shaft and guard can be damaged if the button or the end of the shaft is hammered into position.
- keep the tractor's rear lower lift arms in a position to avoid them striking the PTO shaft or guard when the tractor is turning - if making tight turns reduce the PTO shaft speed or disengage the PTO shaft drive to protect the shaft.
- keep the restraining chains in place and secure them to a suitable point on the tractor and implement - this is usually near the O-guard on the machine and the U-guard on the tractor (this makes sure that there is no restriction in the movement of the chains) - do not attach the end of the chain to the lower lift arms.
- if using a bellows type PTO shaft guard, make sure that the ends of the guard are held correctly in place at both the tractor and implement to ensure the drive shaft is fully enclosed in the guard and replace if necessary.
- if buying a new PTO shaft for heavy drive machines, for example, forage harvesters, mowers, feeder wagons, or rotavators, make sure the shaft is heavy-duty and suitable for the job.
- consider fitting a PTO shaft with a wide-angle universal joint on machines like balers, mowers, and slurry tankers.
- make sure that draw-bar pins on trailed machines do not foul and damage the shaft or guard.
We Also Supply Agricultural Gearboxes
The agricultural gearbox and PTO shaft are two components of a tractor that work together to transmit power. The PTO shaft rotates at 540 to 1,000 rpm. The agricultural gearbox and PTO shaft are connected by yokes at both ends. Depending on the application, they may have a higher or lower torque rating. As a professional agricultural machinery parts supplier, we also offer a wide range of agricultural gearboxes for sale. Contact us now to get more info!
