Sprockets

  What is a Sprocket?

Basically, a sprocket is a grooved wheel with teeth that mesh with links to transfer motion between one wheel and another. These wheels are used in machinery to convey heavy loads.

They come in different designs and sizes and can be fabricated from a variety of materials. They are available in single strand, double strand, and triple strand. They can also be made of a single piece or a hub. They are usually flat or curved.

The most common type of sprocket is the roller chain sprocket. This type is typically found in transmission equipment. It operates along chains formed by rollers that are interconnected by pins. Each pin forms a gap which allows the teeth of the sprocket to move. These sprockets are often manufactured from cast iron, mild steel, or stainless steel.

Some sprockets are designed for multi-strand chains which drive higher torque. These sprockets can be found in power transmission equipment, agriculture equipment, and bicycles. They are also used in conveyor systems.

These sprockets are usually bolted back together to make installation easier. They are typically made from cast iron, graded stainless steel, or mild steel. The chain sprockets are characterized by high tensile strength and high wear resistance.

Some sprockets have a hub that helps to keep the sprockets from being overhung on the equipment. They are also available in a variety of tooth counts and diameters.

The chain sprockets are available in a variety of sizes, including smaller ones for ash-handling applications. They can also be installed by slackening the chain. Custom-made sprockets are also available a HZPT, one of the experienced China sprocket suppliers and manufacturers.

 Cast Sprockets

The general manufacturing method of a large chain wheel is to cast the chain wheel body with a casting process. Its material is zg310-570. After casting, the chain wheel body shall be subject to annealing heat treatment, normalizing and tempering heat treatment, and processing screw holes. After that, the bolt shall be installed with the wheel body of the bucket wheel machine mechanism, and the chain wheel teeth shall be processed on the large gear milling machine, and finally, the tooth surface shall be quenched.

Common cast sprockets are as follows:

 Standard Sprockets

European standard sprockets

American standard sprockets

Japanese KANA standard sprockets

European Series Sprockets

American Series Sprockets

How to Select Sprocket Material?

The sprocket material shall ensure that the teeth have sufficient strength and wear resistance, so the sprocket tooth surface is generally heat treated to achieve a certain hardness

The following table shows the heat treatment methods and applicable conditions of different materials.

Materials Heat treatment Tooth surface hardness Applicable conditions:
15#, 20# Carburizing, quenching, tempering 50-60 HRC Z ≤ 25 sprocket with impact load

15Cr, 20Cr Carburizing, quenching, tempering 50-60HRC High power drive sprocket with Z < 25
40Cr, 35SiMn, 35CrMo quenching, tempering 40-50HRC Important sprocket requiring high strength and wear resistance

Important Specifications of Sprocket

Sprocket specification information the sprocket assembly consists of two main components: sprocket and chain. The system will not normally work if the two parts cannot complement each other. When selecting a replacement sprocket or designing a new sprocket and chain assembly, several factors need to be considered, such as:

Type

Different types of sprockets have different hubs. The hub is the additional thickness around the sprocket center plate that does not include teeth. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has identified four main types of sprockets:

  • A-Type sprocket is only a plate without additional thickness or hub.
  • B-type sprocket with the hub on one side.
  • C-type sprocket with hubs of the same thickness on both sides of the plate.
  • C-type offset or D-type sprocket also has two hubs. However, each hub has a different thickness, making the sprocket asymmetric.

Different types of sprockets allow different applications. For example, type A and type B sprockets are close to the equipment, while type C sprockets are usually larger and need thicker thickness to support the weight.

Tooth pitch
Sprockets may have wide or narrow teeth, depending on the pitch length in the chains they must match. Chains with a large pitch diameter generally demand sprockets with similarly large teeth, while chains with smaller lengths between roller-pin centers need smaller teeth. Tooth pitch refers to the number of teeth per inch.

Bore size
The sprocket bore is the hole through the center of the sprocket through which the drive shaft runs. Knowing the diameter of the shaft ensures that the selected sprocket won’t have a sprocket bore that is too small or too large to fit without tilting or slipping.

Number of shares
A chain is a row of teeth on the circumference of a sprocket. Many ordinary sprockets are single strand. Other sprockets may have double or three sprockets, which can grasp two or three chains simultaneously. The multi-strand chain can drive more torque and power from the common central shaft.
Caliper diameter
The caliper diameter is similar to the bottom diameter. It measures the diameter of the sprocket plate that does not include teeth. When the operator replaces a sprocket with worn and broken teeth, the caliper diameter may be the only way to determine the sprocket size.
Hub diameter
Hub diameter measures the diameter of the hub, that is, the additional thickness of the peripheral plate of the central hole of the B-type and C-type sprockets.

What is the Function of a Sprocket?

Chain SprocketEssentially, a sprocket is a wheel with teeth that fit onto a drive shaft. When it rotates, the teeth lock on to the chain, causing it to pull. The wheels of a sprocket can be made of metal or reinforced plastic.

There are different types of sprockets, and each one has a different function. For example, a bicycle has two sprockets that are connected by a chain. These sprockets carry the rider’s weight and transmit the rotation of the bike to the wheels.

There are also roller chain sprockets, which operate along chains of pins. These sprockets are used in conveyor systems. They fit into the gaps between the chains and transfer movement energy. These sprockets are generally made of grade mild steel or grade stainless steel.

Another type of sprocket is the duplex sprocket. These are usually made of double-strand sprockets. They are available in a wide range of sizes and are often flame hardened.

Another type of sprocket includes the flat sprocket, which is attached to the hub of the bicycle. This type is designed to navigate holes and reduce wear on the bearings. These sprockets normally have a flange on the side. This flange helps to keep the timing belt in the right position.

There are also chain sprockets with an offset design, which are two hubs. These sprockets work with a chain, belt, or a combination of both. The type of sprocket that is used depends on the load conditions.

What is Sprocket Pitch?

Sprocket PitchThe sprocket pitch diameter is the imaginary circle in which the center of the chain pin moves around the sprocket. The pitch circle diameter is the basic design geometry that determines the size shape and form of the sprocket tooth size.
Whether you are designing a new system or repairing an old one, sprocket pitch is a must-have measurement. Choosing the right sprocket for your machine will ensure safe and effective operation.

ANSI standards are the most common standard in the U.S., though other standards are sometimes required for specific applications. The British Standard Chain is the second most widely used. Unlike ANSI standards, the BSC does not generally use 1/8″ increments. It also does not apply to certain applications.

A sprocket with a larger pitch diameter will have wider teeth. This increases the stress on each tooth, which will lower the sprocket’s life. A larger sprocket will also be heavier. This means a larger chain will be required to accommodate the sprocket.

Choosing the sprocket with the proper diameter and pitch will determine whether the sprocket will fit. It is important to choose a sprocket that fits properly to prevent slippage.
