Single Row Spherical Roller Bearings
Single row spherical roller bearings (also called “Barrel Bearings”) have solid outer rings with a concave raceway, solid inner rings with two ribs, and a cylindrical or tapered bore as barrel rollers with cages. Single row spherical roller bearings are particularly suitable where high radial shock type loads occur and misalignments must be compensated.

Features of Single Row Spherical Roller Bearings:
Single row spherical roller bearings with solid brass cages have the suffix MB. The suffix TVP indicates solid window cages made from glass fiber reinforced polyamide. The cages are guided on the inner ring.

Spherical Roller Bearings Material
These Bearings are manufactured with several kind of material based on the application and working environment. Chrome steel is one of the most popular materials used in production of these Bearings because of its durability yet sheet steel, polyamide and brass are also used for some applications. One of the most important parts of Spherical Bearings is the cage that holds bearings at their place. That cage is usually manufactured with pressed steel or brass because both of these materials offer strength as well as temperature resistance.
These Bearings tend to have seals in order to prevent contaminants like dirt, liquid, debris as well as harsh temperature. This type of these bearing doesn’t even need lubrication if they do not exceed 50% of their maximum allowed RPM.
How do Spherical Roller Bearings Work?
All spherical roller bearings have the same working principle. They all have outer rings that with concave (spherical) inner raceways. The inner rings similarly have convex outer raceways (or rolling elements that create a matching convex sliding surface). What separates the various types of spherical bearings is the design of their sliding surface. Some are ring-to-ring (such as spherical plain bearings and rod ends), others use rolling elements such as balls or rollers between the inner and outer rings.

Applications of Single-row Spherical Roller Bearings:
Single row spherical roller bearings are suitable for compensating angular misalignments where there is skewing between the outer and inner ring. As a result of the line contact between the rolling elements and raceways, they can support very high radial loads, even if shock-type loads occur. In contrast, axial load carrying capacity is low. Here are examples of applications in which spherical roller bearings might be used:

Spherical Roller Bearing Lubrication
As with all bearings, spherical roller bearings need to be adequately lubricated. This can be done through grease or oil. Keep in mind that grease has a lower operational speed capacity than oil. Should an operation require very high speeds, oil is a better choice.
If grease is the preferred choice, choose a bearing that is well suited for the lubrication type. Often, manufacturers build a grease groove into the outer raceway to make for easy application of grease through grease nipples.
If oil is the preferred choice, this can be done through a sealed bearing with an oil reservoir or oil-bath lubrication. Keep in mind that with an oil bath, the lowest roller only should be in contact with the oil. This will allow for splash lubrication. If more than the lowest roller is in contact with the oil, the bearing will need more force to bring the rollers through the oil, losing its effectiveness and speed advantage.

Mounted Spherical Roller Bearings
There are three main ways in which spherical rolling bearings are typically mounted.
Setscrew Mounted
With this method, the bearing is mounted with a collar and setscrews. As a rule, setscrew-mounted bearings are designed to support light loads to moderate loads, but not heavy loads. Screw sizes are determined by the expected loads if the screws are tightened to their total capacity. Choosing a screw size that is too big results in excessive ring bending. It is crucial to follow the manufacturers' recommendations regarding shaft fit and setscrew tightening to achieve the desired bearing performance, especially when operating under heavier loads or speeds.
Tapered Adapter Sleeve
Another option for mounting is the tapered adapter sleeve. Bearings are clamped to shafts with tapered sleeves. The tapered adapter compensates for shaft clearance when the locknut is tightened, but the mounting procedure requires more skill and care to ensure that the bearing adapter is tightened enough.
Direct Shaft Mounted Spherical Roller Bearings
Based on loading considerations and service life expectations, spherical roller bearings mounted directly on shafts may be slip-fit or press-fit. As with tapered sleeve mountings, the shaft and housing tolerances determine the resultant fit. The manufacturer's recommendations must be followed at all times.
